This is definitely the result of some truly stunning art direction in Odyssey. This isnвЂ™t a fully fantastical Greece like that of, say, God of War, but it always feel like a world in which those mythical beings could reasonably exist. At once grounded when necessary and magical when you least expect it. Ancient Greece has always been a weird fixation in popular culture, and Ubisoft Quebec has expertly manipulated that fixation to deliver a world that is breathtakingly engaging.

Even the worst games in this series have always presented gorgeously realized facsimiles of real-world locations for players to explore, and Odyssey is no slouch in that regard. Much as any other game in the series, the setting takes center-stage here. IвЂ™d rather not spoil what might end up being the best part of the game, but rest assured, your choices matter in this story.

I often found myself staring blankly at the screen, trying to decide what to do, and several of my actions came back with some major unforeseen consequences later down the line.

You now have Witcher-style dialogue options in conversations, and while early choices make it look like an illusion, the game actually does a bafflingly great job of making your choices matter. In fact, that element of player choice lies at the very center of Odyssey, and the game goes out of its way to make sure it encourages and rewards player agency above all else. To that end, you can now choose whether you want to play as a man or woman, and whichever you choose will be your playable character throughout the adventure. Last yearвЂ™s AssassinвЂ™s Creed Origins saw the series leaning into RPG territory, but Odyssey pulls out all the stops and dives right in. The themes, the tone, the characters, the lore, even the genre is not set in stone. In asking that question, AssassinвЂ™s Creed Odyssey goes farther than any previous entry in completely shaking the foundations of the series. And now we have Odyssey, a game that asks what it means to be an AssassinвЂ™s Creed game. What does it mean to be an Assassin? Or a Templar? Or a brother or son? What does it mean to be вЂgoodвЂ™, in a world where morality is a bit of a moving target? What has made the series compelling is the adamant lack of satisfying answers to those questions. More than any mainstream videogame franchise that I can think of, AssassinвЂ™s Creed is one that has always been most interested in exploring the idea of identity and what that means, both on a narrative and meta-narrative level.
